Nel 1966 l’Inter fu molto vicino all'acquisto di ''Franz Beckenbauer'', ma dopo il mondiale del 1966 in Inghilterra, questo non fu più possibile perché furono chiuse tutte le frontiere agli stranieri. Nel 1977 all’età di 32 anni si trasferì ai New York Cosmos dove rimase per 3 anni e dove vinse ripetutamente il campionato nordamericano. Rientrò nel 1980 in patria dove giocò per l’Amburgo per ben 2 anni, con il quale vinse una coppa di Germania e un campionato tedesco. Termina la sua carriera ai New York Cosmos nel 1983. Pilastro della sua nazionale tedesca, colleziona 103 presenze e 14 gol. Nel suo palmares ci sono molte coppe tra cui gli Europei del 1972 e la conquista, durante lo stesso anno, del pallone d’oro che riceverà anche nel 1976. È l’unico difensore ad aver avuto l’onore di vincere questo prestigioso titolo per ben 2 volte. Ritiratosi, diviene allenatore e dal 1984 al 1990 sale sulla panchina della nazionale di calcio tedesca, arrivando secondo nel campionato del mondo 1986 e vincendo quello del 1990 in Italia. Franz Beckenbauer si può vantare del fatto che abbia vinto un campionato del mondo sia come calciatore che come allenatore. Dopo la vincita del campionato mondiale 1990 si dimette dalla panchina della nazionale tedesca e sale su quella dell’Olympique Marsiglia, ma viene esonerato dopo 4 mesi di lavoro. Fece ritorno al Bayern Monaco nel 1991 come vice presidente e nel 1993 ne diventa anche allenatore, ma in futuro si dimette da vice presidente e allenatore per diventare presidente del Bayern Monaco. Dal 1995 al 1996 risale sulla panchina del Bayern Monaco dove riesce a vincere un campionato tedesco e una coppa UEFA, questo sarà il suo ultimo anno in cui allenerà una squadra di calcio, perché si dedicherà solo al lavoro di dirigente. Dal 2007 al 2011 diviene vice presidente della FIFA. Il 27 novembre 2009 lascia la poltrona presidenziale e la direzione amministrativa del Bayern Monaco divenendo presidente onorario di quest’ultimo. È considerato uno dei calciatori più forti mai esistiti, come Pelé e Maradona.
