Sviluppatosi nel XIX sec. dall’inglese Whist e dal Britch dell’Europa Orientale, '''il Bridge''' ha avuto parecchie evoluzioni prima di raggiungere l’attuale statuto definitivo, ovvero il Contract Bridge. Nel 1932 venne fondata la European Bridge League e, in campo mondiale, la International Bridge League che si occupò dell’organizzazione del primo Campionato Europeo e del primo Campionato Mondiale. Il 25 agosto del 1958 venne costituita a Oslo la WBF (World Bridge Federation) che coordina i rapporti tra i paesi aderenti e regolamenta le competizioni. Nel 1960, a Torino ebbe luogo la più complessa e spettacolare competizione internazionale: le Olimpiadi di Bridge a squadre.
