Il primo esemplare di '''Kart''', fu ideato a Los Angeles, verso la fine del 1956, da Arthur Ingles che costruì, per suo piacere, il più piccolo ed economico veicolo da corsa. Per realizzare il suo progetto, Ingles sfruttò un piccolo motore a 2 tempi per tagliaerba.<br />
Tuttavia è certo che alcuni tentativi non ben riusciti furono già fatti nel 1947 e forse anche prima della seconda guerra mondiale. In Italia il Karting arrivò nel decennio 1960, dagli Stati Uniti. Nonostante i cambiamenti, alla base di questa disciplina c’è sempre la stessa idea di Kart un telaio nudo in tubi, un motore molto semplice, quattro ruote, delle quali due (quelle posteriori) sono prive di differenziale e la totale assenza di qualunque sistema di sospensione. Inizialmente nacque come hobby, ma da qualche tempo è divenuto ormai il primo passo fondamentale per chi vuole iniziare la carriera di pilota di automobile.<br />
