''Rice Jerry Lee'' nacque il 13 ottobre 1962 a starkville, nel Mississippi. Figlio di un muratore, egli trascorse la <br />
sua infanzia a crawford dove, con i suoi otto fratelli, passava le giornate aiutando il padre nel suo<br />
lavoro. Lo stesso Rice racconta che fu proprio questo periodo di duro lavoro che fece emergere il <br />
suo talento nella corsa e nella ricezione, affinando la sua cordinazione occhio-mano con la cattura <br />
di mattoni lanciati in aria dai suoi fratelli. Fu al liceo però che scopri il football. Tutto iniziò quando, <br />
mentre marinava la scuola, incontrò il preside della sua scuola. Egli richiamandolo spaventò Rice <br />
che si mise a correre. Da lì il preside decise di dare al giovane due opzioni : essere punito per la bravata o entrare a far parte della squadra di football del liceo. Il suo talento fu subito notato da numerosi scout e nell'autunno 1981, sotto l'influenza del coach Archie Cooley, si iscrisse alla Mississippi Valley State University.<br />
Nel corso della sua carriera universitaria, dal 1981 al 1984, Rice divenne la stella dei Delta Devils <br />
( soprannome della squadra di football della mississippi valley state university), in coppia con il <br />
quarterback Willy Toten. Da “senior” infranse numerosi record della NCAA per quanto riguarda <br />
ricezione, yards percorsi e touchdown effettuati, guadagnandosi il soprannome di “World”, perchè <br />
non c'era nessuna palla al mondo che non potesse prendere. Nel 1984 finì nono nella classifica per l'Heisman trophy e, nell'All star game dello stesso anno, vinse il titolo di MVP. Nel1999,laMVSUrinominò il Magnolia stadium in Rice-Totten Field in onore della famosa coppia diventata famosa come “Satellite express”. Nel agosto del 2006 venne inserito nella college football hall of fame.<br />
Nel 1985, al termine della sua carriera universitaria, Rice aveva attirato l'attenzione di molti<br />
osservatori, tra cui l'allenatore dei San Francisco 49ers Bill Walsh. Il giorno del draft, furono <br />
proprio i 49ers a prendere Rice nel proprio team, selezionandolo come 16° scelta assoluta. La sua prima stagione da esordiente a San Francisco fu buona ma,fu nella seconda che emerse tutto il suo <br />
talento. Nella seconda stagione, in coppia col il quarterback hall of fame Joe Montana,Rice si <br />
impose con 86 ricezioni,1570 yards percorsi e 15 touchdowns. Segui, nel 1987, una stagione ancora <br />
più prolifica guadagnandosi il titolo di giocatore dell'anno e stabilendo un nuovo record di <br />
campionato con 22 touchdown. Un dato ancora più strabiliante perchè in quell'anno furono <br />
giocate solo 12 partite a causa dello sciopero dei giocatori di NFL. <br />
Nel 1988, uno delle sue più belle stagioni giocate, vinse la NFC (National football conference) e la 23° edizione del super bowl contro i Cincinnati Bengals, disputando una gara eccezionale con 11 passaggi raccolti, 215 yards percorse ed un touchdown. A fine gara ricevette, inoltre, il titolo di <br />
MVP. Entro la fine degli anni 80', Rice in coppia prima con il quarterback Joe Montana e in seguito con Steve Young, era considerato il più grande ricevitore del NFL nonché una grande minaccia per tutte le difese avversarie.<br />
Nel 2001 , dopo aver vinto tre titoli NFC e tre Super Bowl con i 49ers, decise di accasarsi ad <br />
Oakland firmando per i Raiders. Qui vi gioco fino al 2004 per poi passare alla sua ultima stagione <br />
con Seattle Seahawks.<br />

Senza dubbio il ricevitore più prolifico della NFL, Jerry Rice va in pensione con 36 records individuali, ma soprattutto con il merito di aver dimostrato al mondo che il talento non è tutto, e che con costanza e duro lavoro si può andare molto lontano. Nel 2010 la stessa NFL lo ha inserito al 1° posto nella classifica dei 100 giocatori più forti di sempre.<br />
