I primi successi ''Roman Euro Federico'' li ebbe in categoria juniores, così venne convocato al Centro Ippico Federale a Rocca di Papa per prepararsi alle Olimpiadi di Montreal del 1976. Intanto, vinse per tre anni di seguito il titolo di campione italiano assoluto di completo, rispettivamente nel ‘73, ‘74 e ‘75. Cominciò così a prendere parte ai campionati europei e mondiali. Il 1976 è l’anno della sua prima Olimpiade a Montreal, dove si piazzò al nono posto nella gara di completo individuale e sfiorò il podio arrivando quarto in quella a squadre. Seguirono altri anni di assidua preparazione per i seguenti Giochi Olimpici, nei quali continuò a gareggiare nei campionati europei. Nel 1980 alle Olimpiadi di Mosca, qui vinse la sua prima medaglia d’oro Olimpica piazzandosi primo nel completo individuale, montando il purosangue Rossinan. Nella stessa edizione dei Giochi fu premiato una seconda volta con l’argento di squadra gareggiando con Anna Casagrande, Marina Sciocchetti e il fratello Mauro. L’anno successivo tornò a gareggiare aggiudicandosi una prova internazionale a Rocca di Papa. La sua grande passione per questo sport lo portò ad affiancare l’attività di cavaliere a quella di tecnico e istruttore. La sua carriera da cavaliere si concluse con la sua terza ed ultima partecipazione all’Olimpiade di Barcellona nel 1992. La carriera da cavaliere era finita ma non quella di tecnico, infatti allenò la squadra azzurra diverse volte. Nel 2008 Michele Betti diede le dimissioni da tecnico del completo azzurro, da quel momento Federico Roman fu il suo successore come stabilito dalla Fise. <br />

Le sue passioni però non si fermano all’equitazione, è un grande appassionato di vela infatti intraprese nel 2011 una traversata solitaria dell’Atlantico partendo da Capo Verde il 24 Dicembre e arrivò a Barbados l’8 Gennaio. Tornato da questo viaggio riprese il suo lavoro da capo dipartimento del settore completo in vista delle Olimpiadi di Londra 2012.</div>D.masala
