Nella biografia scritta da Jack Kramer nel 1976 viene inserito nella lista dei migliori 21 tennisti nella storia del tennis.<br />
===Le caratteristiche===<br />

La forza di questo tennista era radicata nell’essere calmo e freddo. Non permetteva mai a nessuna situazione esterna di influire sul suo gioco e se in una partita c’era qualcosa che non andava, non lo lasciava trapelare, mostrandosi forte di fronte all’avversario.<br />
Era un giocatore disciplinato e anche uno degli atleti più completi che questo sport abbia mai conosciuto.<br />
Era un giocatore che non mollava mai, come dimostra l’85% dei tiebreakers vinti nell’anno 1972, che lo ha visto trionfare a Wimbledon nel torneo di singolo.<br />

''Stanley Roger Smith'' iniziò la suo carriera mentre studiava alla University of southern California ed in questo periodo vinse i primi titoli.<br />
Il debutto nel grande tennis c’è allo US OPEN nel 1968 dove vince il torneo di doppio assieme a Robert Lutz.<br />
Due anni dopo con lo stesso compagno di squadra vince anche l’Australian Open.<br />
Nel 1971 raggiunge quattro finali dello slam, due di singolare e due di doppio; riesce ad aggiudicarsi lo US OPEN battendo in finale Jan Kodes mentre perde l’altra finale del singolare contro John Newcombe.<br />
Nel doppio invece perde tutte e due le finali: quella del Rolland Garros con Tom Gorman e quella degli US OPEN con Erik Van Dillen.<br />
Nel 1972 raggiunge la finale a Wimbledon sia nel singolare che nel doppio; riesce ad aggiudicarsi il singolo battendo Ilie Năstase, ma perde la finale del doppio contro Bob Hewitt e Frew McMillan.<br />
Alla fine della stagione è solo in testa alla classifica.<br />
Nel 1974 raggiunge tre finali dello slam insieme a Robert Lutz nel doppio ma delle tre, i due atleti riescono ad aggiudicarsi solo lo US OPEN perdendo invece a Wimbledon e al Rolland Garros.<br />
Sempre insieme a Lutz si aggiudica un'altra finale dello US OPEN nel 1978.<br />
