''Van Grunsven Anky'' iniziò la formazione di dressage all’ età di dodici anni, dopo che il suo cavallo Prisco (il quale avrebbe dovuto cavalcare alle Olimpiadi e ai giochi equestri mondiali) eseguì una prestazione negativa nel salto agli ostacoli. Van Grunsven è sposata con il coach della nazionale olandese equestre Sjef Janssen, con il quale ha due bambini. In particolare, durante la gravidanza del primo, partecipò ai giochi olimpici del 2004. Nel 1999, Van Grunsven, frustrata dalla mancanza di moda nel mondo equestre, decise di sviluppare una linea di abbigliamento equestre, che attualmente è venduta a livello internazionale. <BR \> <br />
Van Grunsven era strettamente legata con il controverso metodo di rollkur (pratica definita come “la flessione del collo del cavallo raggiunto con la forza aggressiva”) e ha raccomandato l’ uso di questo metodo nel 2007, in seguito decise di allontanarsi dal metodo in quanto la federazione equestre internazionale (FEI), dichiarò nel 2010 che questo metodo veniva visto aggressivo, infatti allestirono petizioni e boicottaggi specifici, per promuovere il divieto della pratica. Van Grunsven, il 24 agosto 2010, affermò di essere stata diffamata dalla giornalista Astrid Appels sul sito eurodressage.com che riportò su tale sito il seguente “Secondo Anky, le immagini dei suoi cavalli non possono essere collegati al metodo di allenamento rollkur” la causa fu prevista a cominciare l’ 8 settembre 2010, ma Van Grunsven ha ritirato il caso. <BR \><br />
Anky Van Grunsven è una campionessa olandese di dressage, ed è l’ unica atleta che ha registrato tre vittorie olimpiche nello stesso evento. Accanto ai suoi successi olimpici, ha vinto numerose medaglie ai giochi equestri mondiali (WEG), ed è l’ unica ad aver gareggiato in ogni WEG, poiché iniziarono nel 1990. Tra il 1990 e il 2006, ha gareggiato nei dressage, mentre nel 2010 venne nominata come parte importante del Dutch reining team (il reining è una monta western,definito comunemente come un dressage occidentale) che segna un cambiamento importante nella disciplina. In aggiunta ai giochi olimpici e mondiali equestri, Van Grunsven detiene il record di maggiori vittorie nella coppa mondiale di dressage, più precisamente vinse 9 volte tra il 1995 e 2008. Inoltre gareggiò numerose volte alla championship europea di dressage, vincendo sette medaglie individuali e otto medaglie a squadre tra 1991 e 2009. Sebbene Van Grunsven ha cavalcato molti cavalli, solo con due vinse la maggior parte degli eventi : Falò e Salinero. In particolare Salinero, divenne il suo compagno di quasi tutti i suoi successi, fino al suo pensionamento avvenuto nel 2013.<br />
Di recente, nel 2015, tornò nell’ arena ad Aachen per i campionati europei, ma non per completare il rettangolo di dressage ma dei “go” dei rening.<br />
